This Week in Art Club...

HELLO!

I hope you all had a fantastic Mom's Weekend.

This week in Art Club...exciting things...

1. If the weather is good we will do splatter painting (aka, Jackson Pollock Love Day, an appreciation of the artwork of Jackson Pollock) this week (April 15th) during our regular meeting. The gigantic canvas came in, so we will make one large painting that we will donate to Carle Hospital. There will be other paper and canvas if you would like to make an individual painting.

2. Yoga has been moved to next week, April 24th at 6pm. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please let us know if you will be attending, so we can work out rides, as this event will not be on campus.

3. This Wednesday we will be having a VIP Arts Outreach--Art Club cross-over. We will be going to the Center for Women in Transition from 5:45-7:30pm. Please let Vickie know if you are interested. If you would like to go on a regular basis, please let the VIP coordinator know at jdulek2@uiuc.edu We need to let the intern at CWIT know approximately how many volunteers we will have, so please let us know by 7:30am on Tuesday April 15th if you are interested. We play with a group of children, sometimes do art projects, sometimes boardgames...just plain fun with children.

4. T-shirt money is due THIS Tuesday, April 15th by the meeting. Please be sure to contact Meng if you need to arrange and alternate time to drop off money for t-shirts.

5. We will be offering advice on the Chalk Art Contest on Thursday, April 24th at 3pm. Location TBA. If interested, please let us know.

LOCATION of Tuesday's meeting: 398 Lincoln Hall and then moving outdoors if the weather is nice. Check the chalkboards for location if 398 is empty after 7:30pm.

1. Craft Fair

What: Mom's Day Craft Fair!
When: April 12th : 10am – 5pm. Load-in (7am-10am) and Load-out (5pm-8pm) are when we realllllllly need help, but anytime in between will also be really great!
Where: The lovely Illini Union
Why: a. Because we need you!
b. We need people to help out with face painting at one of our booths.
c. We need people to help vendors with load-in/load-out. Donuts will be available for Load-in helpers!
d. We need people to walk around, direct traffic, assist vendors with questions.


e. And also because we have 103 booths of fantabulous stuff you really want to check out!

2. Chalk Art contest

We will be offering our advise to the Chalk Art Contest designers or either April 22nd or 24th. Please let us know if you are interested or available either of those days. It would only be for about half an hour some time during the day.

3. T-Shirts

Meng is ordering t-shirts please contact him and let him know if you would like a t-shirt. They cost $10. Please bring this to the meeting next week or set up an alternate time to meet with him. All orders and money must be in by April 15th.

4. If there is no rain next week we will do splatter painting. We will try to have one large canvas for all of us to work on, which we will then donate to Carle Hospital. We will also have other paper available if you would like to make your own painting.

5. If you would like to make work or have work for Carl Hospital please let us know.

Here's a note from the director:

Welcome to a musical about a city crippled by a long drought. To regulate water consumption, the Urine Good Company has to commodify the most personal of freedoms. By making people have to pay to pee, the UGC uses money and fear to create stability through poverty. The era of the show is not really clear, but let's infer that we're somewhere in the mid-twentieth century and somewhere in the western hemisphere? In this society, breaking the law has nasty consequences; if one slips they'll probably get sent to Urinetown, a mythical, terrible place. That's where the title of this musical comes in.


Thomas Malthus once said, "the rich, by unfair combinations, contribute frequently to prolong a season of distress among the poor." Urinetown: The Musical is a discussion of Malthus' ideas about misery and vice, which he developed in his study of population control. Paying to pee might seem like a ridiculous concept, but the conflict between resources and freedom is nothing new. Are we going to have to make sacrifices when the oil dries up? How do fear and consumption relate to one another? Is it a coincidence that our country, arguably the most free nation in the world, is also the most frivolous with resources? Whoa.


Hopefully these heavy questions don't result in you exiting back to the parking lot. Instead, I really hope it intrigues you. Besides, you've already bought your ticket and we have your money... Waste not want not! Thank you so much for looking past the awful title and making the decision to come and support the arts in our campus community. Enjoy the show!

Floor Lovers Illinois!

Floor Lovers Illinois, a break dancing RSO on campus, proudly announces IL Breaks 5: License to IL will be held in the Illini Union Ballrooms A-C this Saturday starting at 5PM. IL Breaks is a national break dancing competition that gathers talented dance crews from across the United States to Champaign-Urbana to compete for a grand prize. Some of the top breakdancers and DJs in the nation are flown in to judge and perform at the event. The guest breakdancers will also host a workshop free to students earlier in the day. It is an event you don't want to miss!
