Press Release from Krannert Center
OUTSIDE AT THE RESEARCH PARK
July 11 and 25, August 8 at 7:30pm
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts again joins forces with Fox/Atkins Development LLC for a three-show series of summer concerts at the U of I Research Park. All three concerts are free and open to the public. OUTSIDE at the Research Park is a joint project that plays upon a simple concept: great music, fresh food, a green state of mind, and an open, relaxed environment. The performance space and seating area are located just south of the building at the corner of First Street and St. Mary’s Road in Champaign. The tree-lined, grassy space hosted thousands of audience members during the inaugural 2007 series, which featured Funkadesi, Patty Larkin, and The Greencards. The 2008 series will welcome Rosie Ledet and The Zydeco Playboys (July 11), global fusion artists Bandoleros (July 25), and bluegrass rockers the South Austin Jug Band (August 8).
Come Together
Laura Frerichs of Fox/Atkins Development remarks that the concert series is a wonderful opportunity to share the amenities of the Research Park with the greater community and also provides a diverse cultural outlet for those who work within the facilities. Professionals and entrepreneurs in the technology community are innovators and appreciate the arts as another outlet for creativity.
Krannert Center director Mike Ross calls Fox/Atkins Development, which has been a longtime sponsor of the Center, “a valued partner” who “understands the importance of collaborative enterprises across community sectors.” Ross adds that the Center is “pleased to be continuing this relationship by providing programming and marketing support in order to share the communal experience of live, outdoor music with others.”
Krannert Center’s senior associate director Rebecca McBride notes that an important facet of the OUTSIDE at the Research Park series is to “celebrate the unique and rich community in which we live and to bring attention to the amazing people and organizations that collectively make Central Illinois such a special place." The 2008 OUTSIDE series will introduce a new initiative in which attention is focused on a community service group. This year, the Eastern Illinois Foodbank will receive proceeds from the sales of eco-friendly, 100% recycled cotton bags. Krannert Center’s commitment to community can also be seen in its ongoing efforts to reduce waste, decrease energy consumption, and provide environmentally friendly services to patrons. McBride observes that “these vital initiatives have been furthered at OUTSIDE, where we’ll again offer biodegradable containers and utensils, easy-to-access recycling bins, and marketing materials printed on recycled paper.”
Performances
Friday, July 11 at 7:30pm
Rosie Ledet and The Zydeco Playboys
This Church Point, Louisiana, native is the real deal when it comes to the southern Louisiana tradition of zydeco music, but she’s not afraid to throw in a good dose of R&B and a dash of country to mix with her soulfully husky voice and her impressive accordion chops. Ledet’s warm stage presence and infectious Creole-tinged beats have earned her one of the few female spots on the crawfish circuit, and along with that spot have come many accolades, including those from Offbeat Magazine’s “Best of the Best,” as Best Zydeco Performer, Best New Zydeco Performer, and Best Vocalist.
Opening act John Hoeffler begins at 6:30pm
Friday, July 25 at 7:30pm
Bandoleros
So you think you’re not a dancer? When the Bandoleros open up their trove of flamenco rhythms, Middle Eastern melodies, and Latin fire, you’ll want to change your ways and let the music sweep you up into the night air. The quartet has opened for such diverse greats as Tito Puente and Liquid Soul and claims their own divergent roots in Assyria, Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, and Russia. Though at times you’ll swear you’re hearing the Gipsy Kings (the Kings’ Patchai is a frequent collaborator), Bandoleros offer up a not-so-subtle blend of cultural influences as they perform in a sextet of languages that evoke warm nights, lively cafes, far-flung destinations, and the allure of an evening spent under the stars.
Opening act Brandon T. Washington begins at 6:30pm
Friday, August 8 at 7:30pm
South Austin Jug Band
The South Austin Jug Band has a sound that melds finger-picking bluegrass with a bit of rock bass, some driving electric guitar, the occasional surprise of digital looping—and no jug player. The dueling fiddles on sweet melancholy ballads like “Come to Me” season saucier instrumentals like “Po’ Boys in the Glovebox,” and you’re sure to love the upbeat covers from diverse artists like Beck, from whom the band’s gleaned the title for its latest release, Strange Invitation.
Opening act Kayla Brown begins at 6:30pm
Location, Parking, and Services
These concerts will be held just southwest of Assembly Hall on First Street in the Research Park. Free parking is available in the lot south of the Caterpillar/SAIC Building at 1901 South First Street.
All concerts begin at 7:30pm (headline band) with a 6:30pm start time for the opening acts and all performances are free.
Beverages, wine, and food are available from the Biaggi’s Restaurant concession located at the northwest corner of the Caterpillar/SAIC Building.
Restrooms are available inside the Caterpillar/SAIC Building at 1901 South First Street.

Summer at the Krannert Center!

Summer Studio Theatre Company Announces 2008 Season at Krannert Center
The Summer Studio Theatre Company returns to Krannert Center’s Studio Theatre for its 18th season as a professional, repertory company. Under the direction of the U of I Department of Theatre’s interim head Tom Mitchell, this season’s selections will feature all two-person casts. Mitchell says that the small casts, coupled with particularly strong scripts, will allow audiences to focus on the quality of the individual performances and the strength of each storyline. All three of the plays, which will be performed in the round, will be presented in rotation from June 13 through July 26.
This summer's featured performances are: The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown, a delightful, modern musical; The Turn of the Screw by Jeffrey Hatcher, from the novel by Henry James, which is a classic ghost story; and Lanford Wilson’s romantic comedy Talley's Folly. The final two weekends of the summer season will feature six performances total of Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight by James Hurt. The staged reading of this piece will feature cast members from all three shows in addition to other regional performers and is being funded in part by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Committee.
Show Descriptions
Talley’s Folly
By Lanford Wilson
Linda Gillum, director
In a small 1944 central Missouri town, two misfits find romance in a deserted boathouse—Matt Friedman, an awkward Jewish accountant from St. Louis, and Sally Talley, the daughter of the small town’s most important family. This charmingly romantic play by celebrated American playwright Lanford Wilson offers both humor and sentimentality as its two distinct characters negotiate a relationship neither of them expected to develop.
June 13, 21, 26, 29
July 1, 5, 8, 11
The Last Five Years
By Jason Robert Brown
James Zager, director
Kristina Engberg, musical director
This contemporary 2001 musical traces the development and deterioration of the five-year relationship between Jamie, a rising novelist, and Cathy, a struggling young actress. While Jamie tells the story of their growing romance in “forward time,” (from beginning to end), Cathy reflects on the missteps of the relationship in “reverse.” Author Jason Robert Brown, best known for Parade, Songs for the New World, and A New Brain crafts soaring melodies tinged with witty storytelling lyrics that easily blend tuneful pop with Broadway-style ballads. Though Jamie and Cathy hearts divide, their stories do connect at mid-point for a deeply felt celebration of what once was.
June 14, 15, 22, 24, 27
July 2, 12, 13
The Turn of the Screw
By Jeffrey Hatcher, from the novel by Henry James
Lisa Gaye Dixon, director
When a governess takes up her duty to care for two recently orphaned children, Flora and Miles, in a gothic English household, she discovers the curious circumstances of her predecessor’s passing. Soon, the specter of the former governess and her ghostly lover begin to torture the would-be heroine. But are the ghosts real or merely the projections of a young woman’s fears? This classic ghost story, perhaps best-known from the classic film, The Innocents, or the more recent version, 2001’s The Others, has been skillfully reshaped into a compelling two-person performance.
June 19, 20, 25, 28
July 3, 6, 9, 10
Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight
By James Hurt
Funded in part by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Committee
This script-in-hand reading depicts the influence of Abraham Lincoln on three poets of Illinois. The lives and careers of Vachel Lindsay, Edgar Lee Masters, and Carl Sandburg are interwoven onstage with an ensemble of players taking a variety of roles. The show, written by U of I Professor Emeritus John Ahart , was originally staged 20 years ago for The Great American People Show at Lincoln’s New Salem State Park near Springfield and featured a cast of actors that included students who would go on to develop impressive professional careers. This play returns to the stage as the bicentennial year of Lincoln’s birth approaches.
July 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26

Improv for 08 Olympic!

Hi members!
Want to do something special and exciting to promote 08 Olympic game?
Here's the deal!
We are going to freeze on the quad for 5 min with a pose doing different sports.
What is improv in this case?
People freeze suddenly in a space with a posture.
We freeze for a moment and think.
What is Olympic? What is sports mean to everyone of us?
See more at http://improveverywhere.com/
Date: 4/30
Time: 12:45 Briefing, meet at the south of Union, you should see me wearing the Olympic tee.
12:50 Get ready and walk around the quad
12:55 Freeze!
13:00 Hear the bell, we are done.
Dress code: Wear the support Olympic tee if you have one, otherwise, wear white, or other specific sports wear.
What to prepare? Bring balls or racket or your bike or flags etc. For example, if you are going to play Ping Pong, bring a ping pong racket with you. You can grab your friends and be a group as well!
The more people joining, the more fun it will be, so grab your friends with you!
It's easy and fun, no experience needed of course.
Oh ya, if we success in doing this, we'll be the first improv group in the world to promote Olympic!
See you there!
